Background information about Leader In Me

The Leader in Me process was created by educators for educators. Thanks to the success of A. B. Combs Elementary and the schools that followed in its footsteps, Leader in Me is available to schools throughout the world.

Today FranklinCovey’s Leader in Me has become a model that undergoes continual improvement, based on feedback from educators around the world, as well as the evolving needs of the education sector. Each year, educators from Leader in Me Schools gather together for training and discussion around new advancements to improve the model and process to ensure better, more transformation results.

Leader in Me is an evidence-based, comprehensive school improvement model that empowers students with the leadership and life skills they need to thrive in the 21st century. The process starts with a powerful paradigm: every child has unique strengths and talents that they can use to lead. This paradigm allows the adults to encourage the
development of the whole child.

Leader in Me embodies a holistic approach to education, redefining how schools measure success. This approach empowers educators with effective practices and tools to teach leadership to every student, create a culture of student empowerment, and align systems to drive results intrinsically motivating adults and students. Leader in Me serves as a foundational operating system for the school, improving relationships, transforming culture, and intrinsically motivating adults and students.

Beginnings for Warren County Schools

In 2011, the business community raised $1.4 million to ensure The Leader In Me was available in every public school in Bowling Green and Warren County. That was a brave first step – and a national first – toward ensuring the quality of the future workforce of this community.

June 10, 2014, Interim WCPS Superintendent Kathy Goff spearheaded this empowering initiative and began collecting data on student discipline, increased school attendance and increased academic achievement along with other variables to ensure
the effectiveness of the Leader in Me program.

Currently, we have a pre-school through high school initiative providing leadership learning and opportunities for all of our 18,000+ students. There are numerous clubs at the elementary level, where students can find their passion and interests.

13 of our Elementary Schools that have continued to move forward towards. earning their Lighthouse Certification, which is a highly regarded standard. FranklinCovey Education has established the Lighthouse Rubric to establish high standards for the process fidelity and ultimately to impact positive school outcomes.

While three of our schools: Natcher Elementary, Plano Elementary, and Alvaton Elementary have earned the highest Leader in Me honor, of Legacy Certification. Proud to say that Warren County School District has the most of any place in the world with three Legacy schools.

We continue to have a one-of-a-kind partnership with our amazing Bowling Green Chamber of Commerce. Warren County and our Chamber provide real-world work experiences through SCK LAUNCH Experience Curriculum for our eighth-grade students. This process enables students to help them identify their personal interests and career goals. Through engaging lessons, students gain knowledge and skills needed to explore high-demand careers and connect with local industry leaders. Students leave the “Experience” event with valuable insights to guide their future career paths.

At each of our Middle Schools, there is a designated time for direct lessons that provide experiential learning of soft skills needed to be successful in the 21st century.

An additional component of SCK LAUNCH is the Student Ambassadors Program, which provides opportunities for our high school students to learn with FranklinCovey, Consultant & Coach Gary McGuey. Annually 10-12 high school student leaders come
to the Chamber four times throughout the year to learn new leadership skills. Our culminating event for the year is a Community Service Day. Last year, our students volunteered at the Family Enrichment Center and other locations to perform service activities making a difference in our community.

Warren County Board of Education continues to grow partnerships with FranklinCovey Education, as we work together to create our IMPACT & Innovation School which will open August 2026, serving Middle & High Schools students with the Limitless
Leadership Curriculum teaching skills like responsibility, problem-solving, and adaptability taught ubiquitously throughout the school.

Our future is bright in Warren County and Bowling Green, Kentucky, as we continue to provide safety, a strong academic foundation, and endless opportunities for our students.
